A note on method before the stories themselves: each item below was checked against at least one primary source, a space agency, a peer-reviewed journal, a named government regulator, or an on-the-record quote from someone directly involved, rather than taken on a single outlet's word. Where only secondary reporting was available, that is stated plainly rather than dressed up as more certain than it is. Figures that a source's own headline and its own body text disagreed on, as happened once this week, are flagged rather than quietly smoothed over. Claims resting on a single unverified clip or a single interested party's interpretation are either left out or clearly marked as an outlier, not folded in as though they carried the same weight as instrument data.

- Astronomers finally catch one of the ten thousand black holes long predicted to hide inside a nearby star cluster. Omega Centauri, a ball of about 10 million stars 18,000 light-years away, has puzzled astronomers for decades: models say it should contain something like 10,000 stellar-mass black holes, the crushed remnants of exploded stars, yet almost none had ever been confirmed. A team led by Matthew Whitaker at the University of Utah has now found the first one. They combined more than 20 years of archival Hubble Space Telescope images with newer James Webb Space Telescope data, tracking the tiny wobble of a visible star as it orbits something too dark to see directly. The unseen companion, named oMEGACat BH-2, weighs 4.46 times the mass of the Sun, too heavy to be a neutron star and confirmed instead as a black hole. The star and its black hole complete one orbit every 94 years, the longest orbital period of any confirmed black hole binary system on record, a plain sign the two met and paired up inside the crowded cluster rather than forming together. Earlier surveys had already found hints of a much larger intermediate-mass black hole sitting at the cluster's center, a separate and bigger object; oMEGACat BH-2 is the first confirmation of the smaller, more numerous stellar-mass class scattered through the rest of the cluster. A system this loosely bound will not last forever: the team calculates that close encounters with other stars in the crowded cluster will pull the pair apart within a billion years, far short of the cluster's own age of roughly 12 billion years, which is itself a clue that the two objects found each other recently rather than orbiting together since the cluster formed. The team plans to keep searching Omega Centauri with the same technique and expects NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, on track to launch 30 August 2026, to speed up the hunt once it begins regularly imaging crowded star fields with Hubble-like sharpness across a much wider field of view. The findings were published 13 July 2026 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Confidence: solid. Two independent space telescopes, more than two decades of position data, and peer review all back the result. Finding just one of an expected ten thousand shows how much of this population is still invisible; the figure of 10,000 remains a model prediction, not yet a headcount.

- A near-Earth object with a hidden second identity: not an asteroid, a comet. In August 2025, an object catalogued as asteroid 1998 SH2 passed within 2 million miles of Earth, close enough that NASA's Deep Space Network planned to track it by radar. It did not show up where 25 years of orbit data said it should. - A monkey with orange lips, hiding from science for nearly two decades. Researchers have confirmed a new species of colobus monkey in the Lomami National Park region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, only the fifth new African monkey species described in 75 years. Named Colobus congoensis by scientists and "Likweli" by locals, the animal is smaller than related colobus monkeys, weighing about 15 pounds, with sleek fur and a ring of orange around its mouth that flares when it calls. Researchers first photographed a partial, blurred image of the animal in 2008; a clearer photograph a decade later reopened the case, and new genetic, anatomical and acoustic analysis now shows it split from its nearest relative, the black colobus monkey, between 4 and 5 million years ago. Between 2018 and 2022, field teams logged 114 sightings across roughly 900 square miles, and interviews across 52 nearby villages found residents in only eight had ever seen the animal. Researchers recommend it be listed as Endangered given its small range and pressure from local hunting. The forecast: roughly 100 such flares a year, far fewer than the thousands to tens of thousands the ground-based Vera C. Rubin Observatory should find closer to home, but reaching much further back in cosmic time, into the era that should help settle a long-running argument over whether the first supermassive black holes started small and merged upward, or started unusually large from the outset. The Rubin Observatory, a ground-based survey telescope beginning science operations around the same time, will likely catch far more tidal disruption events in total, tens of thousands a year, but only the nearer, more recent ones, since it observes visible light that dims and reddens over very long cosmic distances; Roman's near-infrared cameras are built to catch the older, more stretched-out light that visible-light telescopes miss. Astronomer Suvi Gezari of the University of Maryland, a co-author on the study, put the appeal simply: counting these events at different distances lets researchers "put meaningful constraints on the population" of black holes too faint and too far away to see any other way. Confidence: this is a modeled forecast, not an observation; it rests on published, peer-reviewed methodology, but its accuracy will not be testable until Roman is in orbit and returning real data.

- A super-Earth twenty-five light-years away sits exactly where liquid water could survive. A team led by Paul Robertson at the University of California, Irvine has confirmed a new planet, GJ 3378b, orbiting a star about 25 light-years from Earth, close enough in galactic terms that Robertson calls it "our next-door neighbor," even though the Milky Way itself spans roughly 100,000 light-years. A Washington forum this month brought together lawmakers, military officers and intelligence officials to discuss policy around unidentified anomalous phenomena, according to coverage from NewsNation. Among the items raised: MIT's Lincoln Laboratory has reportedly agreed to hand over a recording of a briefing Air Force scientists received 74 years ago, said to be tied to a wave of radar and visual sightings over Washington DC in July 1952, an episode remembered as "the Invasion of Washington." - The interstellar comet everyone agrees is unusual, and the one scientist who thinks it might not be a comet at all. Comet 3I/ATLAS, the third confirmed interstellar visitor after 1I/'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019, is now fading as it heads back out of the solar system after swinging past the Sun in October 2025 and past Jupiter in March 2026. It posed no threat to Earth at any point, coming no closer than about 1.8 times the Earth-Sun distance, and its nucleus is estimated at somewhere between 1,444 feet and 3.5 miles across, a wide range that itself shows how hard the object has been to pin down even with repeated observation. A fleet of NASA and ESA instruments, Hubble, Webb, TESS, Psyche, Europa Clipper, Lucy, Parker Solar Probe, PUNCH and SOHO among them, has tracked it since its discovery in July 2025. Webb's most striking find, reported in June 2026: the comet releases an unusually high ratio of methane and carbon dioxide relative to water, chemistry pointing to a formation environment very different from comets born in our own solar system. The framing of those observations as evidence of alien technology is one individual's public interpretation, not a position shared by the instrument teams. We include it because it remains one of the most widely repeated interstellar-object claims in circulation, not because the evidence supports it.

Method note: a viral cryptid clip circulating this week was checked and dropped from this edition; nothing about it could be verified within our window. We also declined to treat Avi Loeb's 22-point list as settled science, for the reasons above. Readers wanting the technical rebuttal side should look for the peer-reviewed findings from the 3I/ATLAS instrument teams themselves, which consistently describe the object as unusual but natural. The general rule this desk applies to any unexplained claim: a report becomes genuinely unexplained only once the mundane categories, misidentified aircraft or drones, weather balloons, sensor artifacts, atmospheric optics, hoaxes and simple misidentification, have actually been checked and ruled out by someone with the right instruments, not merely asserted. Most viral claims never reach that bar; most fail one of those mundane tests within days once anyone with expertise looks closely, which is exactly what happened with last week's viral Bigfoot video and the mystery metal spheres on an Australian beach. The cases that remain open after real scrutiny, like parts of the 1952 Washington radar returns that some investigators still contest, usually stay open for want of data rather than for want of an exotic explanation.
The bright side
- Rio's humpback whales, up from near-empty waters to a tourist draw. Whale-watching trips out of Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay are drawing bigger crowds as humpback whale numbers keep climbing along Brazil's coast. Population figures cited by the Humpback Whale Project and Niteroi's tourism agency put the regional population at around 2,000 animals in 1986, near the end of commercial whaling, against roughly 35,000 today, more than seventeen times higher. - Thin, single-source The Washington UAP forum item and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory recording rest on one piece of secondary reporting we could not independently confirm. - Corrected Good News Network's "27-fold" headline for Brazil's humpback whale recovery does not match the 2,000-to-35,000 figures given inside its own story, which work out closer to 17-fold. We use the reported numbers rather than the headline's multiplier.

Terms in this brief
- Stellar-mass black hole. The collapsed core left behind when a star many times heavier than the Sun runs out of fuel and implodes, typically weighing a few to a few dozen times the Sun's mass. Distinct from the far larger supermassive black holes found at the centers of galaxies.
