- A third planet turns up in one of astronomy's most studied star systems, found by accident. Beta Pictoris, a young star about 63 light-years from Earth (roughly sixteen times farther than our nearest stellar neighbor, Proxima Centauri), was already known to host two giant planets and a wide disc of comet-like debris. Beta Pictoris now joins a very short list: only the second known system with at least three imaged planets. Astronomer Jayne Birkby of the University of Oxford summed up the discovery as the planet having played hide-and-seek with observers for over a decade before finally being caught. UC San Diego astronomer Aidan Gibbs, whose Webb-based team reached the same result independently, said the find adds another piece to an already well-studied system that keeps helping researchers understand how planets form and evolve over time.
