- A SpaceX rocket booster meant to burn up over Earth instead carves a fresh crater into the Moon. On 5 August 2026 at 2:34 a.m. Eastern time, the spent upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket struck the Moon near Einstein crater at about 5,400 miles per hour, roughly nine times the cruising speed of an ordinary passenger jet, gouging out a crater estimated at up to 89 feet across, about the width of a basketball court. The rocket had launched in January 2025 carrying two private Moon landers, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience, to a high Earth orbit; Blue Ghost landed successfully two months later, Resilience crashed on its own landing attempt. The 8,800-pound upper stage used almost all its fuel delivering the landers to their distant target, so instead of the usual controlled reentry into Earth's atmosphere it stayed in orbit until solar and gravitational forces pushed it onto a collision course with the Moon. - NASA's Curiosity rover drives into a Martian valley covered, as far as it can see, with tiny honeycomb cracks nobody predicted. Curiosity has spent 14 years climbing Mount Sharp, a mountain about three miles tall inside Gale Crater, taller than any peak in the continental United States, and has seen small clusters of polygon-shaped ground cracks before. - A telescope search for alien technology signals finds none, and turns up a much bigger haystack than anyone realized. Almost every organized search for alien radio signals has focused on a narrow band of frequencies between 1.42 and 1.66 gigahertz, nicknamed the water hole because it sits between the natural radio emissions of hydrogen and hydroxyl, the two components of water, on the theory that an advanced civilization might pick that band as an obvious meeting point. Louisa Mason, a doctoral researcher at the University of Manchester, ran the first search for alien technology signals using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile, a telescope built for ordinary astronomy rather than this kind of search, by reusing four archived observations originally collected for unrelated research instead of requesting new telescope time. Searching two frequency ranges outside the traditional water hole, Mason found no candidate signal above the survey's detection threshold: no artificial technology, no unexplained transmission. The more interesting result was a side effect of the method. When a telescope points at one target, its field of view usually sweeps up many more stars in the background than anyone accounts for. Using a galaxy-wide simulation called the Besancon Galactic Model instead of relying only on star catalogues, which miss faint or distant stars, Mason recalculated how many stars an earlier, well-known search covering 1,327 telescope pointings had actually swept up. Procopio was explicit on the point that matters most: the DNA evidence cannot answer the Shroud's central questions, its age or its authenticity, and was never designed to. Where this is heading
The pattern worth keeping this week is how much confirmation now depends on a second, independent check rather than a single striking measurement. A negative dwell time first seen in 1993 sat unresolved for over thirty years until someone thought to question the atoms as well as the light. A dark matter force that looked, on paper, like it should speed up cosmic structure turned out to slow it down once the full mathematics was worked through, the opposite of the researchers' own starting assumption.
